Abstract: Object: To identify the nuclei related to the jaw opening reflex (JOR) which is evoked by the oral facial noxious stimuli with virus-tracing techniques, especially the nuclei in the diencephalon and the limbic system. Method: Anterograde polysynaptic virus as well as retrograde polysynaptic virus were applied to identify the related nuclei in the jaw movements accomplished by anterior belly of the digastric muscle and pulp sensation. Result: nuclei were marked over the whole brain in the experimental group. 12 nuclei marked with both viruses were distributed in telencephalon, diencephalon, limbic system, mesencephalon and reticular structure. Conclusion: Several nuclei including parasubthalamic nucleus (PSTn), paraventricular hypothalamic nucleus, posterior part (PaPo), zona incerta (ZI) in the diencephalon and central amygdaloid nucleus, lateral division (CeL), bed nucleus of the stria terminalis, lateral division, intermediate part (BSTLI) in the limbic system are related to the JOR. Their pathological changes may explain the oral and maxillofacial symptoms in certain cerebral degenerative diseases, and may also be the potential etiology of temporomandibular joint disorder syndrome.

Key words: jaw opening reflex (JOR), pseudorabies virus, herpes simplex virus, diencephalon, limbic system, disturbance syndrome of temporomandibular joint
