Abstract: Objective: To investigate whether the number of tooth loss are associated with cardiovascular disease in middle-aged and elderly patients. Methods: 545 middle aged and elderly patients, who received implant restoration from January 2012 to December 2014, were retrospectively analyzed for the relationship between cardiovascular disease and tooth loss status. All the patients were divided into two groups. Experimental group (118 patients) included the patients with cardiovascular disease, while the control group  (427 patients) was the patients without cardiovascular disease. The clinical data of dentition defect, gender, age and smoking history were statistically analyzed. Results: Patients with cardiovascular disease group showed increased complicated dentition defect (number of tooth loss>4) than those whom without cardiovascular disease, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.001). The main cause of tooth loss in the patients with cardiovascular disease was periodontopathy. Conclusion: This study provides support for the relationship between individual tooth loss and cardiovascular disease in middle-aged and elderly patients.

Key words: dentition defect, cardiovascular disease, tooth loss
