Abstract: Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor C (VEGF-C) and D2-40 are related to metastatic behavior  of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Methods: A retrospective review of 43 cases with OSCC were conducted. The cases were separated into metastasis group and non-metastasis group, in addition, 10 specimen of normal oral mucosa were used as control. D2-40 and VEGF-C expression were detected by  immunohistochemistry. Results: Lymphatic vessels in OSCC mainly distributed in the tumor periphery. The expression of lymphatic vessel density (LVD) and VEGF-C in OSCC were significantly higher than those in normal tissue(P<0.05), and they were significantly higher in lymph node metastasis group than in non-metastatic group(P<0.05). Conclusion: The peri-tumoral lymphatic vessels are associated with lymph node metastasis and VEGF-C may related to the generation of lymphatic vessels in OSCC.
